Square Enix Commits To Single Player Games

Square Enix

Square Enix is a developer who is currently in the middle of a bit of a golden patch. Not only have they successfully brought life back to franchises such as Tomb Raider and Deus Ex, but they also have the massively anticipated Windows release of Final Fantasy XV to look forward to next month.

Despite the trend for games these days to have some form of multiplayer, one of the major criticisms are of games which seem to entirely focus on this. Making single player, when it is included, almost appear like a secondary thought.

Committed to single player

In fairness to Square Enix, they actually have a really good reputation for single-player games. Referring back to FFXV, while the console release did see the option of co-op, its inclusive was very much on the secondary level and as above, this is certainly not the current market trend.

Games such as Tomb Raider, Deus Ex and Hitman are almost exclusively single player. Given this, Square Enix has committed to keeping this the main focus moving forward.

The future of gaming and loot boxes

In a report via DSO Gaming, Yosuke Matsuda, president and CEO of Square Enix has said: “Games as a service has a very wide meaning, it can mean a lot of things! Recently people have been discussing loot boxes and people not using that properly, I think that’s all linked to this bad perception people have to the words ‘games as a service’. But really, the way we’re looking at it, what it boils down to is that idea of keeping people engaged with our games and enjoying them for longer periods of time.

He added that: “The way we use that expression, really the whole idea, for a single-player game particularly, is the idea that you have the game released and you keep adding more content to keep the players engaged and enjoying the game. And that helps to make it more of a full experience, and that brings in more players to the original game. That’s the rough approach we take to the idea, and that’s why we described games as a service in that sense.”

In fairness, this is good news. Attention to single player campaigns within games simply isn’t good enough.
