Star Citizen is already a far bigger project than many of us could have imagined, perhaps with the exception of Chris Roberts who at least has the vision for this absolutely insane gaming project. The game is still raising money via its crowdfunding system, and that means it’s about to overtake Grand Theft Auto V as the third most expensive game ever developed.
With Roberts Space Industries aiming to put all pre-launch funds raised back into the game’s development, with bigger and more ambitious ideas and stretch goals, the game has now grown to include multiple genres. There’s the space trading and combat aspect that we all expected the game to have at some point, as well as a fully fledged FPS that integrates into the space aspects of the game, as well as it being a freaking HUGE MMO with an extensive persistent universe. With five years of development under its belt, and no ETA on the actual release date, who knows just how ambitious this game will be in the end.
The game’s stretch goals page now shows a confirmed crowdfunding figure of $138 million, which is very close to passing GTA V, and only $2 million behind Destiny. Although the #1 spot is still held by Star Wars: The Old Republic, which rocked out to a budget of $200 million!
“As a crowd funded project, Star Citizen’s scope is based directly on the support provided by our backers. Money pledged goes directly to the game’s development. Stretch goals listed here are intended to reward early backers and to indicate how we are achieving Star Citizen’s full vision.”
It’ll be interesting to see how the game grows over the next few years as funds continue to roll in. As they add more features and playable aspects, more people will want to invest again, and it’ll continue to grow.
