The story trailer for the first film in the Star Wars Anthology series, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, dropped today, and it’s taking us all the way back to 1977. The movie, helmed by Monsters and Godzilla director Gareth Edwards, is set prior to Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, and tell the story of the rebel team tasked will stealing the Death Star plans that Princess Leia was delivering when intercepted by Darth Vader in the opening scene of that very first film.
We have old-style Stormtroopers, AT-ATs, and the classic Death Star itself but, despite its retro vibe, the trailer shows this familiar world through a more modern, dynamic filter.
“It’s exciting because we’re not held to anything and we can be a bit more free, more brave,” Edwards revealed in an interview with IndieWire last year. “And what’s great about everyone at LucasFilm is that they’re encouraging that.”
Rogue One is designed to be “its own self-contained story,” he added, which didn’t “have to tee-up another film.”
Edwards even revealed that he nearly turned down the opportunity to direct Rogue One, saying, “I was honestly hoping I hated it because I needed a break”. I was like, ‘Please be rubbish.’ … But I couldn’t sit in a cinema and know someone else had made this film. If you believe in the Force, it was like everything was destined for this moment.”
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is due for general release on 16th December, 2016.
