Starfield Looks Like No Man’s Skyrim, and I Love It
Peter Donnell / 3 years ago
Starfield may have been “25 years in the making” but it seems it takes a lot of influence from games that came out much more recently than that. I was shocked and a little horrified as the video started, and all I saw was No Man’s Sky, but with better graphics. I’m OK with that, but I expected more from Bethesda. Thankfully, they’ve delivered it as it became No Man’s Skyrim (image credit).
Bethesda released a new gameplay video for the upcoming space adventure, and in the 15-minute long presentation, we see a lot of in-engine action. The combat, character creation, and more were demonstrated, and with each new thing shown, it’s clear there’s a lot still to learn about this game, but that it’s on the right track.
It’s an RPG much like Skyrim and Fallout, so you can expect a sprawling exploration and questing system as we would expect from Bethesda. A huge planet to explore? Great! But there’s over a thousand of them!? WOW! How do you get there? You build your own spaceships of course. And there are some stunning cities in the game too.
So, it seems like No Man’s Sky, great, add in some Cyberpunk, even better, add in Skyrim in space and some Fallout vibes… and for good measure Kerbal Space Program (or possibly Star Citizen)? Perfect. I’ve seen some jabs in the comments that people think it looks boring, but I couldn’t disagree more. Sure, 15 minutes is a long video, but grab a drink, grab a snack and enjoy!
The gunplay looks like it could be tightened up a bit, but the space combat looks pretty decent. Of course, I barely care how the core experience pans out to some degree. With Bethesda games, they give us an ambitious but often buggy affair at first, and the modding community gives us everything else. anyway. Either way, you’ll be playing it in 2023, so not long to wait.
What are your thoughts on Starfield? Let me know in the comments!
What Bethesda Had to Say
A NEW WORLD
25 years in the making, Starfield introduces an entirely new frontier to explore—space. In 2330, you join Constellation, the last group of space explorers seeking rare artefacts throughout the galaxy. Venture through the stars and get to know a memorable cast of characters on a quest to answer humanity’s greatest question—what is out there?
BUILD YOUR HERO
True to Bethesda Game Studios’ immersive RPG DNA, customization is key in Starfield. A look at the character creation menu shows off the depth of choice you have when customizing your hero. Who you will be and who you will become is up to you.
GET CRAFTY
Stake your claim among the stars by building outposts on discovered planets to conduct research and gather resources. Resources that can be used to upgrade your gear, modify your weapons and ensure you’re ready to take on any danger you might encounter.
SPACE FLIGHT AND COMBAT
Outfit your unique spaceship with upgradeable parts and customize its interior and exterior. Then, pilot your ship and engage in space combat in real-time.
EXPLORE WITH UNPARALLELED FREEDOM
The showcase also gave us a glimpse into some of the planetary environments in Starfield. On the rocky moon of Kreet, you will encounter strange local wildlife and the hostile pirates of the Crimson Fleet. But this is only one of many locations to explore. As Howard says, “It’s not just this planet, it’s all the planets in the system… and not just this system, but over a hundred systems, over 1,000 planets, all open for you to visit.”
Bethesda Game Studios “can’t wait for all of you to experience the game,” Howard says. “It’s been an incredible journey for us making it, but we know that’s only the beginning, for it’s when all of you play it that the journey begins.”
