Steam Adds Support For PS4 DualShock 4

Sony has been producing amazing controllers ever since the PS1, and the DualShock 4 is certainly one of the best controllers ever made (for a console at least). So popular is the controller, that Steam now supports the PS4 DualShock 4, without the need for any messing around with software and workarounds.

The recent Steam Client updates were announced on the Steam news page. The update included bug fixes and a host of In-Home Streaming features and fixes.

The part that caught the eyes of gamers though, was the announcement that they had added Steam configuration support for the DualShock 4. Steam didn’t stop there though, they also added API support.

This allows users to customise their controller to the same degree they could with a Steam Controller. And it doesn’t stop there either.

Steam has also added options for users to change LED options on the controller. The update reads;

‘Added LED Brightness/Color controller action binding. The light on the controller can now be changed via a binding. This is useful to mark changes in state such as different action sets or mode shifts, or on start/release press activators for changing while a button is pressed’

Games that already have native support for the DualShock 4 can also choose to opt out of using Steam’s configuration, allowing users to plug and play as they normally would.

It looks like Steam has put a lot of effort into supporting the DualShock 4, and I can honestly see why, it is a great controller. After owing a PS4 for some time (sold it), I do have first hand experience with the DualShock 4. It’s comfortable, responsive, light, the battery life is great and who wouldn’t want a great big light on the front of their controller?

If you’ve been looking into picking up a controller for some of your Steam games and you’re undecided which one to get, the DualShock 4 would be a great choice, i’d recommend giving one a try. Now that Steam fully supports the DualShock 4, it is a completely viable choice even for those who don’t own a PS4.
