Currently in BETA mode with TF2, Steam introduced the community market to let users buy and sell in-game items using Steam Wallet funds. Most likely, other games will be added in to the market in the new year- at least once all the creases have been ironed out and the facility is better tested.
According to the press release, Steam says:
With over a half million trades made every week, the trading system has been very successful. Extending game economies beyond trades and giving players a way to turn gameplay into funds for new items and games is a key component for moving that success forward.
As of now, the in-game items are crates, keys for the krates and items such as Name tag, description tag, decal tool, posthumours kills starting as low as $0.02 and upto $0.52 depending on the item’s actual value.
To access Steam market, click here. As one would expect, you’ll need to sign up with your steam account details.
