In the early days of PC gaming, users had to rely on specialised programs to map commands to a wide range of controllers. Thankfully, the Xbox 360 wired pad provided a much better solution and instantly worked in almost every major release. As this became the standard, other controllers such as the Dual Shock 3 were overlooked and didn’t work in a seamless manner. Thankfully, Valve has acknowledged not everyone wants to use either the Xbox One or Xbox 360 controller and decided to official support the Dual Shock 4. During the Steam Dev Days event, Jeff Bellinghausen who is an engineer at Valve and Lars Doucet, the co-founder at Level Up Labs discussed the similarities between the Steam Controller and the Dual Shock 4.
Apparently, both devices have similar functionality such as the three-axis gyroscope and employ the same API draw calls. It seems Valve decided to work on the PlayStation 4 controller first because it’s quite popular and constructed to a high standard. On another note, the Dual Shock 4 will be fully customisable and provide the end-user with loads of options to change button layouts. This is only the start and other controllers should be added in the near future.
