Users of Meta Quest 2, 3 and Pro are now able to wirelessly play Steam VR games through Steam Link enabling a true cable-free experience compared to previously having to use a wired connection for SteamVR games on the Quest.
Steam Link On Meta Quest
Valve shared the update yesterday which will allow Meta Quest owners to enjoy their VR library on Steam wirelessly through Steam Link. Steam Link is a free app which uses the power of your PC to stream games onto phones, tablets, TVs and now Meta Quest headsets.
The setup process is rather simple:
- Make sure Steam and SteamVR are installed and running on your PC
- Note: You may need to restart Steam to confirm you are running the latest version of Steam and SteamVR
- Connect your headset to the same network as your PC
- Download the free Steam Link app to your headset.
- The app will walk you through wirelessly connecting your computer to your headset.
You also need to have a powerful enough GPU to run VR games but that is likely a given, Steam states a minimum of a GTX 970 but recommends an RTX 2070.
Quest owners are probably very happy with this news as wires are the enemy of VR. I own the original Oculus CV1 which features a lot of wires but it still works so I can’t justify the upgrade just yet.
Steam VR Fest
Further Steam news for VR owners, next week is Steams VR fest meaning there will be lots of great deals for you to accompany the Steam Link support.
