Steam To Improve PlayStation DualShock & DualSense Controller Game Support

Steam has introduced their plans for the Steam store and desktop client to make it easier for those with PlayStation DualSense or DualShock controllers to find games that support those controllers. The new update will allow developers to specify the level of support they offer.

Improved PlayStation Controller Support On Steam

As shared in a recent SteamWorks blog post, developers will now be able to input on their game or app whether their game supports DualSense or DualShock controllers. Developers will be provided a questionnaire about the controller support in their game to allow them to self-identify the level of controller support be it full controller support or partial controller support. Following this questionnaire there will be a preview showing the difference between Xbox, DualShock and DualSense support.

When Will This Roll Out?

Developers will have the chance to review their controller support questionnaires and update their support information which will then be rolled out in a Steam store update in October. The update will include the following:

  • Updates to store page area that displays controller support to also specify the level of PlayStation controller usage
  • Updates to some browse pages to make it easier for players to find new games that support their controller device well
  • Updates to the Steam Desktop client to indicate a game in your library has PlayStation controller support
  • Updates to the Steam Desktop client to make it more clear when a game requires use of a controller to play

Controllers are better than mouse and keyboard in some scenarios so having solid support is always good news, With the PlayStation controller being so different to the Xbox controllers a lot of people have a preference for using the PlayStation controllers over the Xbox ones which are more commonly supported thanks to Windows.
