Steam Users Break Two Records in Just One Sunday Afternoon!

The Steam concurrent player count has been broken exceptionally regularly over the last year. It is, in fact, getting broken so often that in a lot of instances, we don’t tend to report it so much anymore. It’s not that we don’t care, but when their concurrent player count hits a new high on a practically weekly basis, it does tend to lose a bit of its significance.

Following the latest update to the SteamDB (link here), however, this one is definitely worth checking out as not only has one record been broken, but Steam saw two major records smashed on one clearly very heavily gaming-orientated Sunday afternoon!

Steam Sees Two Records Broken!

The two new Steam records were set last Sunday (7th January, so yesterday if you’re reading this on the day of publication). The first is fairly standard stuff as, yes, Steam has a brand new concurrent player count with 33,078,963 people all logged into the app yesterday afternoon (circa 2 pm GMT).

It does, however, get notably more interesting as another record, and arguably a far more significant one also got broken. What was it? Well, while concurrent player counts look like a huge number, we should note that this is merely restricted to the number of people logged into the service. And just to emphasise the point further, being logged in to Steam doesn’t mean you’re gaming (I’m typically logged in all day long even when I’m working here at eTeknix).

At pretty much the exact same time as the new concurrent player record was being set, however, Steam smashed the 10 million barrier of actively gaming users taking the record up to a whopping 10,284,568! – So, the bottom line is that if you were logged into Steam around 2 PM yesterday afternoon, congratulations, you’re part of the new concurrent player count record.

If you were actually playing a game at the time though, double GZ and you’ve just managed to be a part of two new records! – Albeit, don’t expect any kind of trophy to be in the post and I’d probably advise against putting this on your CV!

What do you think though? – Let us know in the comments!
