Testing
General Use
To test this mouse mat, we used the SteelSeries Xai Laser Mouse recently reviewed. We tried to simulate as best as possible an office style environment by focussing on using programs such as Microsoft Word/Excel, Web browsing with Google Chrome and Photoshop. This gives a wide range of uses for the mouse and allows us to test precision and the general comfort of using the mouse on this surface.
I was quite surprised by how much more controlled the mouse felt on the mouse mat, especially when compared to a standard office desk. However, the mouse movement was slowed down by the mouse mat compared to the desk surface so you would need to use a higher CPI to achieve the same amount of movement. This does lead to more precise movements however. The noise emitted from the mouse moving over the surface is reduced when using this mouse mat, as the mouse mat is a silky cloth it slides over with hardly a whisper compared to my desk.
This mouse mat seemed to perform very well in this very generalised category.
Gaming
Now for something the mouse mat was designed for. We tested this mouse mat during several games and found that in general it was a lot smoother. To the extent that we were less likely to get stunted movements across the screen when trying to navigate the StarCraft II maps. The precision of the mouse was certainly not compromised either.
All in all, it performed very well in this category.
