Studio Ghibli Tease Mysterious Lucasfilm Collaboration
Mike Sanders / 2 years ago
Studio Ghibli has always typically tended to prefer to steer away from collaborations wherever possible. Perhaps this was partly out of the experience they had when they themselves had to partner with bigger studios in their very early days. – It is, however, hard to deny that over the last 10 years, the future of the beloved animation studio has always looked a little bleak. Particularly since the majority of their most recent releases have typically proven to be underwhelming (both critically and commercially), and more so as studio head (and animation genius) Hayao Miyasaki gets older and older.
Following a very mysterious teaser post on their official Twitter account, however, it appears that Studio Ghibli might be set to form some kind of partnership with Lucasfilm!

Studio Ghibli to Partner With Lucasfilm?
The most obvious conclusion to draw from this teaser is that Studio Ghibli is set to work alongside Lucasfilm for some yet unannounced animation project. – A move that has possibly been helped due to the animation giant finally making a (mostly critically unsuccessful) transition into CGI production with Earwig and the Witch (currently available on Netflix).
Will it be a Star Wars product though? Well, this is clearly the most logical possibility, but I don’t know. While something involving Star Wars would undoubtedly be a potentially very lucrative venture for Studio Ghibli, it doesn’t really feel like part of their modus operandi.
The community will, of course though, have its (humourous) say in the matter!

What Do We Think?
I can’t help but feel any kind of deal with LucasFilm should be perceived more as worrying to Studio Ghibli fans than optimistic. – The rumours that the animation giant has been struggling financially are, of course, well-known (or at least heavily speculated). As such, perhaps they have had to enter into a metaphorical deal with the Devil here to ensure the future of the company. Oh, speaking of deals with the Devil, did I mention LucasFilm is owned by Disney?…
We will, of course, have to wait and see what future updates may reveal. – Could this potentially spark a My Neighbor Darth Vadar though? I certainly hope not!
