Super Mario Run is a frantic side-scrolling endless runner game which has already become the top-grossing release on iOS. The $10 asking price which isn’t clearly outlined has resulted in many 1-star reviews and people questioning the game’s value. Additionally, Super Mario Run requires an internet connection to combat piracy which makes it unsuitable for those in remote areas or without a reliable mobile data plan. As per usual with highly popular mobile games, some developers have submitted pretty dreadful clones and hope to capture people’s attention. Examples include Super Puppy Run and my own personal favourite, Super Antonio Run. The lack of subtly in these rip-offs is amazing and who knows, they might be even better than the original? OK, maybe not!
Of course, the official Android version hasn’t been released yet and there’s no word from Nintendo when the game will be available to Android users. The current alternative is to try out Super Plumber Run by Onduck Games which employs a rather basic art style and clunky gameplay. Oddly enough, it has a certain charm and the terrible character details made me chuckle. I’m guessing Nintendo will contact with Apple and Google to remove imitations soon, so it’s advisable to download the clones while you can.
Clones are usually a source of enjoyment and can become a hit on social media if they’re compared to the original release. Super Mario Run is an excellent game, although it’s not really my sort of thing. If you’re interested in the Mario franchise and own an iOS device, I’d recommend downloading the game and trying out the first few levels for free.
Do you think the $10 fee is fair for Super Mario Run? I’ve never bought anything on a mobile platform before and prefer to spend money on the PC or home consoles instead.
