When it comes to servers, AMD has made some serious ground in the last decade. Their EPYC processors are certainly impressive, but with the new 4th generation of EPYC, it seems the sky is the limit. The new processors allow them to add even more performance per server, and when space is at a premium, the density and performance ratio improvements have a huge impact on any server, and big benefits to Cloud and GPU servers, where workloads can be extreme.
From a single EPYC processor, you can easily run the latest GPU clusters, a cloud data centre server or even a 24-bay rackmount storage server with ease.
These new CPUs are extreme in every sense and come with staggering I/O capabilities. You can deploy a whopping 160 PCIe Gen 5 lanes, so rather than being limited to racks of 3.5″ mechanical drives, you can have a plethora of the latest NVMe Gen 5 drives allowing for previously unseen read and write throughput and response times from your servers. Ever wanted a few dozen Gen 5 drives in RAID? I know I have.
For Cloud Gaming services, AI, HPC, and many other enterprise-based applications including cache clusters, these gargantuan 192-thread processors support 12 x DDR5 memory modules, allowing for Gigabytes of RAM to work in combination with the 160 PCIe lanes, allowing for some truly exceptional systems.
If you still want to go beyond that, these new EPYC processors will also be available in a dual-socket format, effectively doubling their capabilities per system.
