SureFire 1TB SSD & 2TB HDD External Drive Review

How Much Does it Cost?

The SureFire Gaming SSD and Gaming HDD are both available on Amazon and from other major retailers. Prices and stock of items are in flux all the time these days, so I’m hesitant to put a number down. However, you can check the stock and prices on the links below.

Overview

There’s no shortage of storage solutions out there these days, but finding the right one for you can be tricky if you know very little about storage. SureFire may not be a name many people know, but if you dig into their history a little, they’re actually the Verbatim gaming division. Even I remember buying their blank CDs, tapes and even their 3.5″ floppy drives back in the day, so it’s not like they’re new to the storage business!

Performance

The drives actually did better than I expected. Not that I was expecting them to suck! However, both drives exceeded the speeds that SureFire claimed on their own website. Not by much, but when it comes to read and write speeds, a little faster is always welcome.

I ran my gaming tests on PC and Xbox Series X, and I’m pretty impressed with the results. Gaming directly from the SSD posed no real issues, and I couldn’t see it impacting performance in any major way compared to gaming from a SATA III SSD mounted internally. That being said, be sure you’re hooked up to a USB 3+ port to ensure the best performance.

It’s a shame Series X games can’t be loaded from external drives like this. However, backing up and restoring from either drive was simple enough. Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War is around 190 GB now. That will take you just 10 minutes to back up on the SSD and 25 minutes on the HDD; much faster than most people could re-download the same content!

As you can see in Andy’s video too, keeping your entire PC game collection on the drives, as we do for our test benches, is certainly an option also.

Should I Buy One?

I don’t think most people want to buy an external drive to back up their media; it’s more a necessity really. Games are getting drastically bigger these days, and you can fill your hard drives incredibly quickly, especially on consoles. Being able to backup and restore a game, or even install it directly on a portable drive gives you way more flexibility than simply deleting and redownloading everything each time you’re short on space. With excellent performance, competitive prices, and a funky design, the SureFire Gaming SSD & HDD are ticking all the right boxes!

As a child still in my 30's (but not for long), I spend my day combining my love of music and movies with a life-long passion for gaming, from arcade classics and retro consoles to the latest high-end PC and console games. So it's no wonder I write about tech and test the latest hardware while I enjoy my hobbies!
