Microsoft Surface users have not had it easy. Although the compact notebook hybrid has been very popular since its announcement, many of its users have been complaining about problems that make it difficult for regular use. A few months ago many were complaining about persistent backlight bleed problems on the Surface Pro compared the the Surface Pro 4. However, it seems that even Surface Pro 4 users have an annoying problem of their own too related to the display. In particular, many are having flickering screen issues.
Users at the Microsoft forums have been complaining for more than a year now. In fact, there are over 1,600 issues logged that these Surface Pro 4 users now have their own website about the problem dubbed “Flickergate”.
The problem apparently is a hardware issue inherent with the design. The device heats up and it affects the display. Microsoft has stated that they are aware of the problem and are “monitoring the situation closely”.
Meanwhile however, users have resorted to throwing the device in the freezer in order to temporarily stop the problem. Users state that they get about half an hour’s use for every 10 minutes in the freezer. Unfortunately, this is not a simple problem which can be resolved with a software update so these users have no choice. The only option is for an actual screen replacement but that would cost $450 USD. This certainly explains why Consumer Reports has warned users about Microsoft Surface products reliability a few months ago.
