A proper security setup is a vital feature for a NAS. I’ll naturally also test how the unit performs in this regard, and it should perform very well thanks to the built-in hardware encryption engine.
With various supported file systems, I am also testing them for comparison. While I recommend Btrfs myself, there are other options. The values in the following chart originate from a single-drive setup and as such, work as a baseline.
I’ve also started to include an iSCSI comparison whenever it is available. Windows 7 and forward all have iSCSI initiators built in, and the setup only takes a few clicks on your NAS and PCs. It is a convenient and smart way to share storage over your network, and its popularity is ever-growing.
