A closer look
Opening up the Synology DS216se and we find a classic two-piece chassis with a metal center where the motherboard and fan are mounted.
The motherboard itself is very simple and features the Marvell Armada 370 88F6707 CPU right in the middle and a small Samsung DDR3 chip with 256MB next to it.
The other side of the PCB features one of the SATA connectors as onboard as well as a PCIe x4 connector for the SATA bridge that connects the second drive to the NAS. Next to the PCIe connector we also see the Marvell Alaska 88E1318 Gigabit Ethernet controller.
The CPU doesn’t feature any heatsink or other passive or active cooling, it relies on the case fan and that should be plenty for a CPU like this.
The memory chip comes from quality vendors too and, in this case, Synology used a Samsung DDR3 256GB chip.
Below are a few more close-ups of the aforementioned features.
