Synology Releases DiskStation DS418 Value Series NAS

Synology has released the DS418, a versatile value-series NAS for home and office users. The DS418 uses a Realtek RTD1296 64-bit quad-core CPU, running at 1.4GHz with 2GB of DDR4. This is capable of on-the-fly 10-bit H.265 (HEVC) transcoding up to 4096×2160 resolution at 30 fps. In other words, it does pretty well as a central file storage and media server.

Synology DS418 Features

Aside from the media transcoding capability, the DS418 has two RJ-45 Gigabit LAN ports capable of  link aggregation and failover support. There are two USB 3.0 ports available as well. One at the front and one at the back.

This is a 4-bay NAS and it supports 3.5″ as well as 2.5″ SATA drives. The total maximum internal raw capacity is 40TB (10TB per drive) supporting EXT4 file system. It also supports SSD with TRIM feature support. Despite the small size, this NAS is capable of up to 2048 local user accounts and 200 concurrent CIFS/AFP/FTP connections.

To keep the drives thermally in check, a pair of 92mm fans operate to pull hot air from inside. These fans are capable of operating in cool mode, quiet mode or in full-speed mode if necessary.

Packaging Content

Other than the DS418 unit itself, each package comes with the accessory pack, an AC power adapter, power cord, 2x RJ-46 LAN cable and a quick isntallation guide.

As an optional add-on, users can also opt for a Synology Surveillance Station device license pack. This allows for surveillance device integration with the DS418 NAS device for up to 8 surveillance devices.
