Team Group Xtreem Vulcan DDR3 Memory Kit Review

With any product that I get in to review, I like to do a little bit of homework to get an understanding what it is about and to get a little background information on it. After noting on Team Groups website that this is an overclocking memory kit, I had really good hopes for playing around with it, but sadly today the case could not have been any more different. I’ve never found a kit that did not like running at anything slower than stock timings nor wanting to really overclock, especially as the kit is intended for just that job.

The overclock that we did achieve did have a good impact over the kits stock performance and I would therefore recommend upping this kit straight to the 1800MHz level just to get that bit extra out of it, even though it appears that it doesn’t really want to do much more than that sadly.

Performance aside, the kit has made a big improvement in design over the Xtreem LV kit that we looked at previously in my mind and the shorter heat-spreaders make for a far better scope of compatibility with larger heatsinks.

Priced at around £40/€50, some solace can be taken that for a rock bottom price, you can get an 8GB kit that would be ideal for builds where top end performance is not critical such as media centres of school/ office systems. Unfortunately however I do feel that the kit may need a second looking over or the choice of chips used revised to reflect the fact that this kit is supposed to be for overclocking and pushing that bit further rather than not at all.

We know that Team Group have got what it takes to make a kit that holds a few surprises when pushed a little, but sadly the Xtreem Vulcan may require a little bit more factory testing to get a product that does as intended. If you’re after a cheap kit however that will operate under stock conditions fairly well and cover the grounds for most users, then by all means for the price you can’t go wrong, just sadly don’t expect to push it that much further.

Other kits from Team Group can be found for sale on Overclockers UK, so be sure to check out the range they stock here.
