This has been quite a week for Team17, the studio most famous for the classic Worms series. They announced that they would be getting into the NFT space, and holy crap did that backfire on them in a bloody hurry. Their plan was to team up with a third party called Reality Gaming. This would have seen worms dressed up in stupid outfits, then sold as NFT in what they called an “art project.” Skip ahead one day, they’ve cancelled their plans. That’s right, the hatred was so fierce, they barely made it 24 hours before pulling the plug. Let’s take a look a the best bits of that fallout.
Fans have been pretty vocal on this one, as have other media too. The hashtag #TeamNoNFT is now being used on Twitter to voice their concerns. There are plenty of articles out there and bitter comments sections that gave a swift reaction. I’m sure some out there loved the idea of Worms NFTs, but it seems to be a silent minority at this point.
The biggest responses come from within though, as Team17’s business operations seem pretty badly scarred today. Going Under developer Aggro Crab issued the following statement while cutting ties with the publisher.
Playtronic Games, creators of Yooka-Laylee weren’t quite as scathing, but the result is the same.
Then Ghost Town Games, the makers of Overcooked chipped in.
That’s just the public ones too, I’m sure there’s more to come, and lord knows what was said behind closed doors!
In closing, Team17 issued the following statement titled “TEAM17 TO END METAWORMS NFT PROJECT”
“Team17 is today announcing an end to the MetaWorms NFT project. We have listened to our teamsters, development partners, and our games’ communities, and the concerns they’ve expressed, and have therefore taken the decision to step back from the NFT space.”
My popcorn didn’t even have time to cool down, this one really just started and finished so damn fast!
