In recent years, Disney has hit a rich vein of form in its animated features not seen since the 90’s. Admittedly the live action films have been a bit hit and miss, but its hard to point out a Disney animated film from the last 10-15 years which hasn’t been, at the very least, good. Not including, of course, the straight-to-DVD affairs.
Wreck It Ralph was definitely one of the stand out films and along with Up, goes in my book as a modern Disney classic. I am therefore delighted to see that Wreck It Ralph 2 is on the way, and more than that, we have our first teaser trailer.
The original film seeks characters from video games basically living as a community within an arcade center. Our protagonist Ralph is ironically, a bad guy. At least, a video game bad guy, but he doesn’t want to be. After years of being the bad guy in his video game and shunned by his co-characters, just once, he wants to be the hero.
This leads him to quit the game in search of another where he can be a winner.
Admittedly, there is somewhat a contradiction in that being an arcade game, Ralph should win significantly more often than not. I mean, does Mario ever really win against Donkey Kong?
In the new trailer following the arcade connecting to the internet, the video game characters are able to visit its virtual world.
Within seconds of being there, Ralph is subjected to click-bait and special offers which speaks very highly of a return of the humor of the original film. While the first film did have a lot of video game references, it didn’t overkill it. A lot of other films would have been tempted to make as many references as possible, Wreck It Ralph did just enough to give a nod to classic games.
Wreck It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the internet will release on Thanksgiving. That’s the 22nd of November for us non-Americans.
This is genuinely looking pretty awesome and perhaps, for the first time in years, I might go to the cinema to see a Disney film.
