Tesla Model X Front Trunk Space Can Be Opened with Just a Screwdriver

This may not be exactly news for most people who own a Tesla Model X and have read the manual but apparently there are not many of those around. YouTuber Salomondrin has pointed out in his video of how easy it is to access the front trunk of the Tesla Model X (or as Tesla lovingly refers to it as, a “frunk”) with just a simple screw driver. This is not in any way a mistake and despite the click-bait title of YouTuber Salomondrin’s video, it was actually a deliberately added feature for first responders. This information is actually available on Tesla’s website under the Emergency Response Guide 30-page booklet in PDF form.

On the Tesla Model X, the frunk emergecy release is accessed via release cables in the tow attachment of the front bumper. The tow hook cover must be released first to expose the straps then must be pulled in order (marked A and B), so that the primary and secondary latches can be opened. On the Model S, the release cables are located on the wheel wells. These releases were initially located inside the glove box compartment prior to 2014, but that required breaking the car window or breaking into the car’s door locks to release the trunk. The security alarm is triggered whenever the trunk is opened and released via this method so it is not some sort of thing that can be done stealthily by a criminal. It will not trigger the alarm if the trunk itself remains closed even if the releases are accessed.

Tesla also provides rear storage from inside the vehicle without any external release options, which is the recommended area for storing valuable objects such as laptops and other electronics, leaving the frunk space for other less valuable items.
