The Five Biggest Tech Problems At Christmas

Christmas Tech Problems!

At Christmas, it can be hard to fit your tech needs around all the problems and commitments that come your way. It’s certainly not an easy time of the year. We, therefore, explore five of the worst tech problems you can have at this time of year.

1 – Practicality problems

All through the year, you might have been covetously anticipating your Christmas present. Perhaps Santa is going to bring you an Oculus Rift? A Massive television?

When you open your present your heart is filled with joy. You finally have it! At that point though, you have to consider, where exactly am I going to put this?

While your brand new 4k 50″ TV might be a fantastic toy, alas, your TV stand can only cope with your current 32″ flat screen. Indeed, your Oculus may arrive to find that your 8′ x 4′ bedroom isn’t perhaps the best setting for it. Your safe zone will certainly be a little cramped.

2 – Getting a game you didn’t really want

It’s always a bit awkward. Particularly as a kid you may not get games often, so Christmas represents a major boon for new gaming opportunities. You wrote ‘Minecraft’ very clearly on your Christmas list at least 12 times so when the big day comes, you open it up and you find… Big Rigs Over the Road Racing!

Yeah, we’ve all been there with unwanted presents, but a game is so much more heartbreaking. You know they spent the money, but it was, from gaming terms, just a complete missed opportunity. The worst thing though is, you have to be nice about it.

3 – Right Game, Wrong Console

This problem is particularly notable for those of who have (or had) other relatives. Grandad and Grandma have been commissioned by Father Christmas to get your game. They go in to the store and gravitate towards a member of staff who quickly, but just for an instant, gets the ‘oh please no’ look on their face.

After explaining for 15 minutes that they don’t know much about this ‘computer business’ they walk out with your game, wrap it up and give it to you on Christmas day with a look of somewhat smug satisfaction.

You open it up to find, yes, they got the right game, but alas, for a console you do not have.

4 – Cables and inputs!

Yes! You declare! You got your Nintendo Switch or PS4 Pro. Suddenly you turn from a 30 something-year-old man into a 10-year-old again. You rip the packaging open. Admire its sleekness and drag out the TV to plug it in. Suddenly it dawns on you that your TV has 2 HMDI inputs. If that wasn’t bad enough that’s currently running your Sky box, Firestick, Xbox One, Steam Link, PS3 and Blu-ray player. All of which are wired in an intricate means that disturbing them would be akin to disturbing the force.

5 – Actually getting to try any of it out

Christmas is over, at least, it is for me once everything is unwrapped. Everything afterwards is a mere distraction. An annoying encumbrance to what I really want to be doing. PLAYING WITH MY TOYS!

In fairness, this is a problem for kids of all sizes. You might want to spend the afternoon assembling your 2000 piece Lego kit, or playing your game, but oh no! Other people have other plans for you! Dinner, visiting relatives etc. and you’re just being plain anti-social!
