The impact of Ivy Bridge on current processor pricing

Bulldozer Price Tracking – FX 6100
The FX 6100 was the cheapest 6 core Bulldozer available on launch costing around £135. The FX 6100 shows a similar trend to the FX 8120 with consistent price drops occuring every month. With the introduction of Ivy Bridge the price fell by a further £7 and the AMD cashback program helped the processor down a further £10 to the £90 level where it currently stands. At £90 the FX 6100 is currently 30% cheaper than it was at launch.
FX 4170
Like the FX 6200 the FX 4170 is one of the Bulldozer newcomers. Coming 5 months after the launch of the first Bulldozers this quad core 4.2GHz processor is AMD’s highest ever stock clocked processor. On launch this processor came in at around £105.
Today after the effects of the Cashback program have been added these processors cost just £90. Interestingly enough the Ivy Bridge launch had no effect on this processor. Since the AMD FX 4170 is designed as a contender to the i3 series and the Ivy Bridge launch contained no Core i3 processors, AMD saw it fit not to cut the prices of the FX 4170s. The current price of £90 is about 15% cheaper than the launch price.
FX 4100
The FX 4100 was the first quad core made available with the Bulldozer launch. The FX 4100 started at around the £90 level whereas today it can be found as low as £72. The launch of Intel’s Ivy Bridge coincides with a £6 price drop on the FX 4100 but that fizzled out after only a few weeks as prices returned to the £85 level with AMD noticing the lack of Ivy Bridge Core i3s. The big performance drop came with the CashBack program seeing nearly £13 shaved off this already low price processor. We expect this price cut is also in anticipation of the launch of Ivy Bridge Core i3s which are due soon.
The current price of the FX 4100 is around 20% cheaper than at launch.
