Normally with big projects like this, I hear about them through the various communities I follow, but this one came completely out of nowhere as far as I can tell! A team of clearly very talented modders have just released an unofficial PC port of the classic PlayStation JRPG The Legend of Dragoon. Hailing back from the 90’s PlayStation 1 era of gaming, this game was long overdue a PC port, so they’ve taken it upon themselves to do just that.
Of course, this isn’t just as simple as having the ROM running in an emulator such as DuckStation. This game now runs natively on PC, with many tasty upgrades! Best of all, it’s already available to download and play, however, further updates are expected in the future too.
The game now supports 4K resolutions, and as such, the assets look incredibly crisp and detailed, especially given that it came from the 32-bit era of gaming. It also runs at 60 FPS, so not only does it look better than ever, but it runs silky smooth too.
Similar to other games of the era, Legends of Dragoon uses pre-rendered backgrounds with 3D characters over the top, much like many of the Final Fantasy and early Resident Evil games of that era. However, they’ve upscaled the assets significantly, and they really do look amazing.
The game engine has been reverse-engineered, allowing for significant improvements in the game’s rendering, refresh rate, texture resolution and so much more. There’s no higher-quality audio, improved and more accurate controller input, there’s full support for a mouse in the menu system, and loading and saving times are virtually zero.
Features
You can download the latest version of this PC port from their official website. However, while this is a port, it still needs the original ROM to run, as it sort of decodes it on the fly. Where you’ll get that from? Well, use your imagination, or ya know, your legit copy if you have one.
This video is a follow-up to our previous videos of Severed Chains that showed Legend of Dragoon’s opening scene. This time the highlights are 4k native resolution (not upscaled res like in emulators), 60FPS, and upscaled graphics, which will be possible in the next major release of Severed Chains for all to enjoy. Oh, and we’re marking the occasion with an updated design for our video credits!
