Around three weeks ago we heard how Thecus updated the compatibility list of drives for their entire NAS line-up to include Seagate’s latest 5TB drives, which in turn allows for far denser drive arrays in both the home and commercial markets. Now only a few weeks later Thecus has announced once again that they are now offering support for Seagate’s highest capacity drives, the 6TB Enterprise capacity 3.5 V4. Whilst the 5TB drives are supported right across the Thecus product lineup, the 6TB support will be limited to enterprise class systems for now, whilst I expect we will see support in the SMB and SOHO systems in the not too distant future.

Florence Shih, one of Thecus Chairpersons said in a statement,;”Seagate has consistently been at the heart of drive innovation, and their recent entry into the 6TB market is further proof of just that. By taking proven technology and pushing it beyond traditional expectations, Thecus is also taking data professionals to new realms of capacity and performance.”

Referring back to the chart that we saw in the 5TB announcement, where the 5TB drives would allow for a total RAW capacity of 3.125PB in a full on array of systems, utilising the 6TB drives will add on another 640TB of storage space taking the maximum storage capacity up to a mind boggling 3.73PB. Although the addition of 640TB may only seem small in the grand scale of things, add that up across a whole data centre for example and the financial benefit of the increased density is potentially monumental.

Seagate’s VP of Marketing, Scott Horn added; “Featuring the fastest performance available for a 6TB nearline HDD, 50 percent greater storage density, and optimized performance for 24×7 nearline workloads, Seagate’s 6TB Enterprise Capacity 3.5 HDD v4 is the perfect HDD storage companion for a Thecus enterprise NAS solution when meeting the growing demands of the modern data center. “#

Whilst the benefit of the extra storage capacity is only available on enterprise class products, the advances in technology will trickle down towards consumer class drives and the benefits will then be seen across the board as users strive to have greater amounts of storage space without taking up too much physical space or power.
