Overview
It takes two things to make a great NAS: You need a solid hardware foundation coupled with a great operating system. The Thecus N2810 didn’t let us down on either of those points, on the contrary, it left a big impression. We get a great Intel CPU with hardware encryption engine coupled with an upgradeable RAM system in a quality built enclosure that is rounded off with great connectivity. This combination doesn’t just make the N2810 great for file storage, it also allows you to turn the NAS into a secure file locker and centralized multimedia hub.
Dual LAN for fail-over and link-aggregation coupled with fast USB 3.0 ports allow you to connect it well, and on top of that it also features an HDMI port for direct usage on your TV or monitor. Whether you want to build your own personal cloud system, store and share your home movies, photos, and media library, Thecus has you covered with the N2810. The NAS can even deliver 4K content directly to your TV and devices and is as such perfect for the next generation of high-resolution media.
The operating system has come a long way and the new ThecusOS 7 has a much fresher look than the previous, something that will speak to the casual user. Advanced and experienced Thecus users will still find everything they are looking for the first time. It’s built logical and sorted well. Thecus also applied a consistent layout and use of dialog objects that make it intuitive to use, even when moving to features that you haven’t used before.
Performance wise the N2810 has nothing to hide either and with the addition of both XFS and BTRFS file formats as options on top of EXT4, you got plenty of options to get just the right match for the rest of your setup. The power of thin provisioning iSCSI is also packed within the N2810, allowing you to take a lot better advantage of your storage pool.
Pros:
- Powerful CPU with hardware encryption
- Upgradable RAM
- Solid build quality
- Amazing operating system
- Dual Gigabit LAN and USB 3.0 with one-touch copy
- Enterprise level features
Cons:
- RAM upgrade could have been easier, but it isn’t difficult either.
“I don’t know what I should praise more, the new ThecusOS 7.0 or the amazing NAS itself. If you’re in the market for a 2-bay NAS, get the N2810!”
Thank You Thecus for providing us with this review sample.
