Setup – Users, Groups, Storage, and Shares
Users
All users and groups can easily be created through the WSS Dashboard and there is no need to venture into the “normal” Windows control panel.
Creating a new user doesn’t require a lot of information, just a name and a password as well as the level of users rights. There are a few more rules when it comes to passwords than on Linux systems, but it’s all to your benefit and contains rules that you should follow anyway. This includes both capitalized and non-capitalized letters and numbers.
We haven’t created any more shared folders yet, so we only have the one default one located on the system drive for our company. Should you already have created more, then you’ll see them listed here too.

And that’s it, our user has been created.
User Groups
User groups allow for easier maintenance of your users than having to manage each and everyone manually. Most of the time, you’ll have a lot of users who all need the same access rights and that’s easily done by grouping them.
Create a group and add members is as simple as a few clicks.
Storage
It is time to take a look at the storage part of the setup, after all, this is a NAS. There are a row of default folders on our OS drive, which in this nice W2810PRO NAS is an SSD, but there isn’t much more space here for all our data.
Under the Hard Drives tab, we find our storage setup and this is where we can create a new storage pool – if we haven’t already.
There are only 2 bays in this NAS and as such, we only have two drives available. With the current market, we have up to 10TB drives available, but I’ll be using 6TB drives today.
Add a name, pick the file system and resiliency and we are good to go.
This is pretty much as simple as it can be to configure and we’re quickly done with it.
Shared Folders
Now that we have created a storage pool to our liking, we can create some shared folders on it too for all our files.
Enter a name and a location as well as an optional description and that’s it.
Well, that isn’t completely it, we also need to define who has access to this new folder.
And we’re done. We can now access our newly created share over the network, given that we have access rights to it.
