Thecus WSS2016-Powered NAS Are Almost Here

Two months ago, Thecus announced that they were working on the implementation of Windows Storage Server 2016 into their enterprise rack-mount NAS units. Now we get a time frame of when that will happen, and it is soon.

At the end of this month, the enterprise rack mounted systems W8900, W12000, W16000, W12850, W16850, W12910SAS, and W16910SAS will enjoy all the benefits of this latest WSS version. With that on the horizon, it is time to start and think about whether the new improvements will make you want to switch up to WSS2016 from your current system. When using Windows Storage Server 2016, the Work Folders service immediately notifies Windows 10 clients about file changes and the changes are synced immediately. In Windows Storage Server 2012 R2, the clients aren’t notified of changes and it can take up to 10 minutes before they notice those changes.

Microsoft introduced the Resilient File System (ReFS) with Windows Server 2012 and it is designed to be the next-generation file system after NTFS. In Windows Storage Server 2016, we get the new block cloning feature that dramatically improves the performance of VM operations such as .vhdx checkpoint merge operations. A new ReFS scan tool also enables the recovery of leaked storage and helps salvage data from critical corruptions.

Data Deduplication also got a lot easier. Previously there were serious limitations here, especially with large volume sizes. In Windows Storage Server 2016, Data Deduplication supports volume sizes up to 64 TB and supports individual file sizes up to 1TB.
