Over Power Protection and Max Wattage

Power supplies nearly always offer a little more output than what the box says. This isn’t unusual. In fact, in general, most power supplies can (reasonably happily) manage another 10% on top of the rated level. All without complaining too much.

Given that the Thermaltake Toughpower iRGB PLUS is such a solid looking power supply, however, I must admit that prior to testing, I already suspected that this would be good.

So, was it good? Well, in a word, yes! The power supply managed to achieve 1288 watts before the overpower protections kicked in. Given that this is over 25% of its base rate, it’s clearly exceptionally well designed.

Admittedly, 1000 watts of power should be enough for the vast majority of gaming PCs. If you did, however, need to occasionally ask a little more from this power supply, it shouldn’t have a problem obliging you.
