After over 20 years since NBA Jam dominated the summer of console sports gaming, NBA PLAYGROUNDS is looking to repeat the same success. Those of you familiar with NBA Jam will immediately see similarities and perhaps even might recall the last time you played (and the subsequent beating you took after having pipped your much older brother with a last second 3 pointer).
As can be seen in the trailer NBA PLAYGROUNDS seems to be making all the right overtures to basketball fans who perhaps don’t enjoy the super realism of the NBA2K series. With cartoon visuals, exaggerated bodies, power ups, arcade mode, 2 vs 2, 1 vs 1, online mode and slam dunk physics from the ACME corporation this is shaping up to be a great nostalgic hit which will have the older fans returning in their droves for just one more game.
With a release for the Xbox One, PS4, PC and the new Nintendo Switch, this is clearly looking to be the party game of the summer and given its release date, could well exploit the annual gap sports gamers experience in the off-season.
With a reported release price of just $19.99 this is clearly going to fly… it’s just the landing we have to worry about!
NBA PLAYGROUNDS has some pretty big sneakers to fill and adding a minor droplet of cynicism, the failed attempt to re-boot Sensible World of Soccer does come to mind. With a scheduled release for next month, we’re hoping this is going to be nothing but net, but wouldn’t be surprised if this was a rebound.
NBA PLAYGROUNDS is to be released in May for the X-Box One, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch.
