Thirty-Six Dark Web Users Charged With Fraud

Dark Web

The dark web is not a place for the timid to visit. For those not comfortable with it, the dark web is probably a place best avoided. While the majority of websites are entirely harmless, a small number engage in illegal activity.

One such website, which dealt specifically with stolen details, has found thirty-six of its members charged with fraud.

Cyber-Crime

In a report via the BBC, The Infraud Organisation website deals (or dealt) with stolen card information, passwords and general fraud activities. In March 2017, the website’s forum was said to have over 10,000 account holders.

Following a major investigation, however, thirty-six members of the website have been identified. Of these, thirteen are already in custody and set to be charged with fraud.

Once such person in custody included Anthony Nnamdi Okeakpu who resided in the UK. He is alleged to have joined the group in 2010 user the pseudonym ‘moneymafia’.

Arrests

Of the 12 other arrests, they come from all over the world. While 5 have come from the US other countries include; France, Pakistan, Canada, Russia, Egypt, Macedonia and Italy.

John Cronan, of the US Justice Department, has said: “As alleged in the indictment, Infraud operated like a business to facilitate cyber-fraud on a global scale. Its members allegedly caused more than $530m in actual losses to consumers, businesses, and financial institutions alike – and it is alleged that the losses they intended to cause amounted to more than $2.2bn.”

Misconceptions of the dark web

There are many misconceptions about visiting the dark web. Specifically that using an ‘onion’ browser hides your identity. While this can, broadly, be true, it’s not entirely correct either. One way or another these thirty-six members got careless, not that I am in any way excusing their behaviour in the first instance.

As I said in the beginning though, the deep or dark web is no place for the timid. You have been warned!
