What many people may not know, particularly the Apple crowd, is that Intel owns and invented the Thunderbolt technology. It then leased it to Apple for a gargantuan fee. Currently a Thunderbolt controller costs around $20 each, which merely adds to the over inflated price of Apple products. When we see the Thunderbolt arrive on the computer platform we should see the price fall as production increases.
A lot of demand for Thunderbolt has been created by Apple and apparently ASUS, Gigabyte and Sony (so far, there may be more) all have products ready for April 2012 when Intel allows other vendors apart from Apple to utilise the technology. Thunderbolt offers an impressive maximum bandwidth of 10GB/s (1280mb/s) while USB 3.0 has a maximum bandwidth of 5GB/s (640mb/s) so Thunderbolt does look like an attractive offering for the computer crowd who are always looking for the fastest technologies.
