Time Warner’s new Roku app turns a streaming set-top box into cable TV

Time Warner Cable and Roku are in a partnership to bring a cable TV to streaming set-top boxes with just a simple TV app, and it will be rolled out during this quarter.

The app lets subscribers stream more than 300 channels.  This is the first time Time Warner Cable is letting a 3rd party device access its live content. The company and content owners have been extremely strict in managing its programs.

As a result there are certain restrictions. Other than being compatible with Android and/or iOS devices, Roku’s TWC box will need to run from the subscriber’s home network and therefore you cannot go to anyone else’s house to watch Live TV.Though Time Warner lets up to 300 channels be streamed via the Roku device, it depends on which package you have.

The app will be available for the Roku streaming stick, the Roku 2, the Roku HD and the Roku LT.
