Tom Cruise Tells You How To Improve Films On Your TV

Tom Cruise – How To Improve Films On Your TV

When I heard that Tom Cruise had posted on Twitter about how to improve watching films on your TV, my initial reaction was that this was going to be something about pirating films. You’ve seen it before. Particularly in those commercials from the 1990s (usually at the start of a VHS). I’ve included one below just, incidentally, you’ve gotten a little nostalgic over them.

It seems, however, that he is actually raising a decent point here! In a video released with Christopher McQuarrie (director of the upcoming Top Gun sequel), they explain how a common-TV feature might be affecting your viewing experience.

Soap Opera Effect!

In the video, they refer to ‘motion-smoothing’. A feature that is usually standard on most HD TVs these days. It’s a feature that’s primarily designed to stop moving objects appear to blur. Something particularly useful for better pictures in sports programs. It does, however, sometimes negatively affect the way in which is the film is displayed. Particularly if it’s recorded in higher definition quality.

How To Turn It Off?

In the video above, they, unfortunately, can’t give you specifics. They correctly point out that while this effect can be turned off on most TVs, it’s naming (and toggle location) is often varied. As such, a simply Google search for your TV manufacturer is probably the best place to start.

Give it a go and let us know if you see any improvements! – Oh, and here’s that slice of nostalgia I promised you earlier.
