A small Discord server for a Minecraft community has been used to spread top secret US military documents.
Following a recent report from the Wall Street Journal leaked documents surrounding the war in Ukraine have been posted onto a Minecraft discord server supposedly during an argument around Minecraft maps and the war in Ukraine. The documents leaked contained information surrounding the types of weapons used by US and Ukrainian forces, details on Ukrainian air defence systems, and various other statistics. Officials state that these leaks are the “most damaging in decades”.
The FBI has since arrested a 21-year-old Massachusetts man, Jack Teixeira, in connection with this leak. Teixeira is a Junior Air National Guardsman who has served as an information technology specialist since 2018, where he gained the knowledge to access and share this information. The good to come out of this though is that it has highlighted key issues with the data protection protocols and should give the US Government information on how to prevent this from happening in the future, though it is concerning how easily this has happened.
This isn’t the first case of sensitive documents being leaked by gamers as this has happened several times within the War Thunder community where documents surrounding Military vehicles and weapon schematics have been leaked to win internet arguments.
Teixeira really sacrificed his job to win an argument, what an absolute muppet.
