Toshiba Announces 8TB MG Series Enterprise HDD

Toshiba announced the volume availability of its next MG Series of Enterprise Capacity HDDs providing 8TB for business critical servers and shared storage systems. While there are larger drives on the market, size isn’t everything and it is still a 33 percent increase in capacity from the previous Toshiba 6TB SATA generation.

The new 8TB MG HDD (MG05ACA800) is Toshiba’s first 8TB SATA3 capacity-optimised storage drive for enterprises and it doesn’t just bring increased capacity. The new drive can also deliver a sustained transfer rate that is 12 percent better when compared to the MG04ACA drive.

“Accommodating rapid data growth continues to be a prime focus for both cloud-scale and on-premise IT environments,” said Noriaki Katakura, General Manager of Toshiba Electronics Europe, HDD Business Unit. “Toshiba’s new 8TB SATA enterprise-capacity HDD provides high capacity per-spindle. This helps OEMs and cloud service providers (CSPs) deliver enterprise-class storage capacity for business critical workloads that need to keep pace with rapid data growth.”

The drive’s power management features help to lower the operating costs and improve the operating environments during off-peak activity periods. Naturally, the drive is designed for 24×7 operation and it will provide you with a 550TB per-year workload rating and with a 2,000,000 hour Mean Time To/Before Failure (MTTF/MTBF). This is also the first Toshiba Enterprise Capacity SATA model to support the new industry-standard host-initiated power-disable feature for improved device management capability.

The new 8TB MG Series HDD drives are sampling to OEMs and System Integrators now, which means that they will become generally available as an option soon. Typical use cases include tiered storage infrastructure for public and private cloud deployments, virtual desktop interface (VDI), email servers, data protection and other business critical systems such as NAS and SAN units.
