Conclusion
When the amount of solid state drive you can get for your money isn’t enough for the capacity you need, then its time to reach for the hard disk drives. They might be slower, but they have the capacity and the lower price per GB of storage in their favor. Toshiba’s X300 is a perfect example of such as it comes with large capacities up to 6TB, a good performance around the 200MB/s and the low price of just above 30 per TB of storage. That’s hard to argue with that kind of storage for so little.
Design wise, there isn’t much to say to the X300. It is a 3.5-inch hard disk drive and it looks like one. There’s a large sticker on the top with a Toshiba logo and the drive details, but that’s all. That’s how a hard drive should look, so that’s okay. It’s more a tool than an item to display.
The great performance is thanks to the 7200 RPM spindle speed and 128MB cache buffer, combined with the quality components that the drive is made of itself. It also comes with features such as dual-stage actuator which improves the head accuracy while also negating the effect on head-track alignment vibrations can cause. There’s also a shock sensor to help make sure that no data is lost. Those are features otherwise known from NAS and Enterprise drive’s that we’ve previously tested, but this is a Desktop drive.
Overall, the Toshiba X300 Desktop 6TB hard disk drive looks like a solid choice for anyone that needs a lot of capacity. May it be photos, videos, designs, or your game library, the X300 is sure to do a good job.
