Trademark Suggest Nintendo N64 Classic Console Incoming

Following the massive success of the NES Classic – despite some questionable sales decisions – further retro Nintendo consoles became inevitable. The Japanese company is already looking ahead to the SNES Classic, released later this year, but is another console redux on its way? A new trademark filing by Nintendo suggests it is, and that the result will be the Nintendo N64 Classic.

Nintendo N64 Classic

On 18th July, Nintendo filed the following trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office:

The familiar image is, of course, an N64 controller. The black outline is similar in design to that of the NES controller from the NES Classic edition box (via Business Insider):

Supporting Evidence

The N64 Classic speculation isn’t based merely on the above image. The filing is registered under the following goods and services (edited for emphasis):

  • 9 Telecommunication machines and apparatus; Electronic storage media recorded with programs for computers.
  • 28 Consumer video game apparatus; Parts and accessories for consumer video game apparatus; Controllers and joysticks for consumer video game apparatus.

“Video game apparatus” and “Electronic storage media”, eh? Sounds like a console and its built-in flash memory, to me.

Potential N64 Classic Release Date?

Assuming that the trademark design means the N64 Classic is in the works may be a leap, but only a tiny one. Since the SNES Classic is due out this September. Nintendo released the NES Classic on 10th November 2016. Therefore, expect the N64 Classic during the fourth-quarter of 2018.
