Tritton Kunai PS3 & PSVita Gaming Headset Review

To test the gaming capabilities of the Kunai I decided to fire up some of my favourite Playstation 3 games, Uncharted 3 thanks to its high quality and dynamic sound, Gran Turismo 5 for the roaring engine sounds and Battlefield 3 for its incredible bass and generally chaotic sound scapes.

Initial impressions were simply stunning with the Kunai, setup was quick and easy and as soon as the first sounds came through the 40mm drivers I knew I was in for a treat. The bass that this headset can produce is simply incredible. Its sound distortion free throughout the full volume range and even when things get a little crazy on battlefield 3 everything remained crystal clear. For a stereo headset you I got great sense of direction across all three games and it just proves that a headset doesn’t need to offer virtual surround to give a thrilling gaming experience.

Next up I decided to play some music through the set, I can always judge how well a headset performs by the amount of time I’m willing to keep it on my ears. With the Kunai I was flick from album to album to play through a couple of dozen of my favourite tracks as the audio reproduction was unbelievably good. Not just good for a sub £50 headset, but good enough to compete with headsets that cost twice as much.

The same performance was found with movies too, while I didn’t watch a whole film, I do have a nice collection of HD trailers and clips on hand to test with. I could quite happily kick back and watch a movie while using the Kunai headset.

Voice chat was really nice and clear too, even when you have the game volume at near maximum volumes I was still able to hold a distortion free conversation and my team only had complaints about my gameplay not my sound quality.

One thing that Tritton don’t advertise with the Kunai is that its fully PC compatible, after connecting the USB cable to the PC, windows installed the drivers and it was fully functioning with my games, Skype and anything else that requires audio on the PC, I’ll take that as a value added bonus.

While I don’t have a VITA to hand for the last test, I was able to connect the set using only the 3.5mm jack to my phone, iPod and my laptop and again everything functioned just as above, so a really big win on performance for the Kunai.
