Tritton PC510 HDa Gaming Headset Review

Final ThoughtsThis headset is good. Lets make that very clear, it is very good. Tritton have produced a wonderful piece of kit which is both simple and elegant and on top of that looks and feels good. They built it from the ground up to be 5.1 surround sound and it certainly delivers, it is not quite as good as watching a film in the cinema but unless you have lots of money this is the closest thing to it. The sound-quality has a warmth and a depth while being very responsive so you will hear your music in a new unadulterated light.

The best part about this headset is the simplicity, it does not require drivers or anything else. It does of course need a 5.1 sound card, although most motherboards have a 5.1 or 7.1 output built in. While this is a good feature, it does make it hard to use normal speakers at the same time – I don’t want to always listen to music through headphones- so in that sense it does take over your computer, it does have to become the primary audio output. However that isn’t such a bad thing when it is so good at it.

There are only two things I don’t like about this headset, one is that its very hard to use with speakers, and secondly the in-line remote is fairly heavy (or at least compared to the cable) and is at an awkward length down the cable so it will always want to hang from the headphones. It is very hard to keep the remote on a table or desk as it will slide off whenever you move as the cable to the headset is short. While this is not a huge problem I found it slightly annoying, if its dangling its an extra weight on one side and if its on a desk, you can’t move without it falling off. Another few inches might have made all the difference.

Pros:

  • True 5.1 surround sound
  • Nice warmth and depth to the sound
  • No drivers needed
  • Decent overall cable length

Cons:

  • Remote is in the wrong place and heavy when dangling
  • Requires 5.1 output so hard to use with speakers (without disconnecting etc)
