Tropico 6 Confirmed as Using Unreal Engine

Hola Presidenté, this is Penultimo calling you from eTeknix headquarters. For those of your supporters who eagerly await the next installment of your game, there is great news! Apparently the great Limbic Entertainment are bringing us the next game in the glorious  Unreal 4 engine. All hail Presidenté!

Tropico 6 Confirmed by developers as using the Unreal 4 engine

If you haven’t already guessed by now, I’m quite a big fan of the Tropico series. I’ve been hooked since the original. While the series has had its ups and downs, it’s generally always provided entertaining game play. For those of you unfamiliar with the series, Tropico is basically Sim City set in Castro’s Cuba.

The game has over the years generally blended city building, with revolutionary factions, assassination attempts and pesky elections into something Sim City is far too sensible to attempt.

Since the 2nd installment, Kalypso Games, the publisher, has passed the game around several development studios. The most recent being Haemimont Games. Unlike many games, Tropico does really have a ‘core code’ to pull from. Haemimont Games decided that upon agreeing to take on Tropico 5 that the code from 4 was too much of a tangled mess as that itself had been butchered from Tropico 3. They therefore decided to re-built it from the ground up reported PCGamesN.

The newest developer, Limbic entertainment has decided to largely do the same thing again, however, there is a key difference. The Unreal 4 engine will be used to code and produce Tropico 6. We can therefore expect a level of graphics not seen before in the series.

Tropico 6 is going to be awesome!

While graphics have never been the selling point of Tropico, the last few installments have not been overly impressive in those areas. A nice new re-boot of the graphical engine as well as the programming might be a decent poke in the right direction. The series was at risk of stagnation. This is particuarly given that from Tropico 3-5 has almost been identical except for a few minor differences.

The official announcement last month was no surprise, however, I do have high hopes for this. Vive La Revulucion! Viva El Presidenté!
