International Space Station

The International Space Station (or ISS) has inspired us to look beyond our planet to other worlds. Promoting acceptance for all nations, the ISS is a symbol of a future we could have.

That of course, could all be entirely shattered if, for example, we have blown up this planet before getting around to figuring out how to leave it or, alternatively but perhaps not entirely disconnected, in a report via GizmodoDonald Trump decides to privatise it.

Donald Trump, as controversial as ever

While it might sound controversial, privatising the ISS, to the US, at least might make a little sense.

Yes, before you get your stones read, hear me out first.

At present, NASA is currently massively underfunded. Well, more accurately, it certainly doesn’t have the funding to do what it would like as quickly as it would like. Additionally, the maintenance of the ISS has so far cost an estimated $160 billion. Of which, it is believed that the US has invested around $100 billion.

Therefore, getting this off the books would be tempting. This could, in addition, create some extra funding for NASA. That is, however, as far as my leeway goes with this.

Will it happen?

Personally, I think I should make it clear at this point, I think it’s a terrible idea. I do, however, understand the concept of wanting to get it off the books.

That being said, I think its important as a symbol is perhaps greater than the financial cost of running it.

I think is Donald Trump did propose this, it would fall flat as even this ‘dip of the toe in the water’ has met with some pretty terse responses.
