The Turtle Beach Star Wars Battlefront Sandtrooper Gaming Headset is available from many major high street and online retailers, but also directly from Turtle Beach for £69.99. This is a little expensive for a headset with this level of performance, but keep in mind that there’s some added value to be found in the multi-format support; you’ll only need a single headset for multiple gaming setups, and that’s a real cost saver in the long run.
Overview
There’s a lot to like about this headset, but it isn’t perfect either. Some of the plastics do look a little cheap, but I think that may be a by-product of the Star Wars colour scheme as the finish reminds me of the old Packard Bell desktop PC cases. The ear padding is a little too tough at first too, more so than it usually is on Turtle Beach headsets and many users may not realise that it takes time to wear in and dismiss the headset before it does. Finally, the microphone is just the standard one for most Turtle Beach headsets, I feel they’ve really missed the opportunity to match its colour screen to the headset, and a bit of sleeving on the boom wouldn’t have been a great expense.
There are some great things about this headset, though, it’s not as bad as I’m making it sound here. It’s a great looking headset in general, for Star Wars fans the colour scheme is seriously cool and I can certainly see it appealing to younger gamers (based on how my kids reacted when they saw it!). The audio quality is great, there’s a good bit of bite to the 50mm drivers, and a rich amount of bass that’s great for gaming. The closed back design lets you get lost in the game world with minimal distractions and despite its bland appearance, the microphone works great for team chat.
The lightweight design, the multiple adjustments available in the headband and ear cup mounts and the detachable microphone are all welcome bonuses. However, the biggest feature here is the multi-format support. If you’ve got a couple of consoles, a handheld gaming device, mobile device, MP3 player, etc, you’ll be able to use this headset on all of them. The only hurdle for Turtle Beach is that they’re not the only £70 multi-format headset on the market, but since they’re the only one with Star Wars Battlefront branding, they’re obviously not targetting the wider market with this specific model.
