Without a doubt, this is a Turtle Beach headset design, and it’s pretty familiar. Of course, it shares quite a lot of features and performance aspects with its little brother, the 600 series. However, the differences are certainly there. The left ear cup has an extra button, allowing you to trigger Super Human Hearing mode with ease. I’m not a fan of this mode myself, but for boosting things like footsteps in competitive gaming, it does get the job done.
The ear cup design is a little more robust too, and the closed back design helps lock in the sound, and lock out the outside world. If you like to get lost in your favourite games, this is certainly a big help. Add to that the ANC, and you can cut out some more ambient noise. Sure, it’s not up there with high-end Philips ANC, but it does its part ovearll. It’s not the most outrageous design either, but if you’re not a fan of the garish gaming headsets out there, that’s no bad thing.
The 700 series features a chunkier headband too, with squared sides rather than the rounder 600 series design. I do prefer this one myself. However, it’s still got that ergonomic shape to the drivers and ear cups that make it comfortable to wear even if you’re wearing glasses.
The ergonomics, in general, are pretty fantastic. Turtle Beach nailed down their formula years ago, and have stuck with it quite religiously. The padding is very forgiving, and the soft leather material provides a close fit and really helps lock in the sound. When you’ve got the headset around your neck between matches, the folding design helps keep them comfortable too.
The mobile app is a big deal for this headset. However, for quick controls, the main stuff is at your fingertips. The microphone folds up out of the way and is surprisingly unobtrusive with how it sits close to the ear cups. Power, Bluetooth, SuperHuman, are all on dedicated buttons, while chat and game volume have their own dedicated controls too.
The headset is built for wireless gaming, and I must admit that the connection is flawless. Even walking around the whole house, I had no issues with lost fidelity or connection; not that you would need to go that far generally speaking. The microphone works well, it’s a little lacking in the bass frequencies, but that’s not uncommon for a pin-hole microphone design and it’s bright and clear for game chat.
The drivers themselves pack plenty of punch too, as we’ve come to expect from Turtle Beach. The EQ is a little flat by default, which is great for music. However, if you tap into the mobile app and pair the headset, you can tweak the EQ and profiles to your liking. That can be a bit tricky mid-game, however, you’re unlikely to need to do this often once you find the sounds you like the most and save them. My only gripe is that you can’t update firmware from mobile, and you will need a PC to complete that step, ouch.
Overall, it’s a very comfortable headset to wear for long periods. Some may prefer the fabric covers on the 600, but I like these leather ones. As I said, they help lock in the sound, and that in turn provides a deeper low-end to the audio. The range is pretty fantastic though, with thumping bass when you want it, warm mid-tones, and crystal clear treble that really brings out detail in your favourite games, movies, and music. The DTS headphone feature is by far the standout though, at least for movies and gaming, as it’s pointless for music. It’s one of the best virtual surround engines out there right now, and adds so much to the positional audio capabilities of the headset.
The battery performance is a little lower than the 600 series. However, we managed a few days of gaming for a few hours a night before needing to reach for a charger. However, when you do get that battery warning, you’ve got a few minutes at best before it flatlines. You can use the headset wired too if required, as there is a 3.5mm jack, but the battery life is more than enough that you’ll likely want to stay cable free.
