Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Xbox One Wireless Headset Review

A Closer Look and Performance

The Stealth 700 is a great looking headset, and while it makes a few minor tweaks and adjustments to the design, it borrows a lot from the existing Turtle Beach product range. That’s no bad thing though, and I can understand that the design is part of the TB branding. The green trim shows you that it’s the Xbox One model, much in the same way the blue trim would hint at the PS4 model.

Built-in Controls

There’s a huge amount of features built into this headset, but everything is kept simple and within easy reach. For the most part, you simply pair this headset and get to your gaming, movies and music. It just works, no fuss, no mess, right out of the box. However, for the more advanced features, you’ll find handy built-in controls on the ear cup.

Independent Volume Control

With the tap of a button, you can enable the Super Human Hearing mode, which is effectively a powerful EQ that enhances sounds like footsteps in online FPS games. It should like crap to my ears, but the technology does work. If you’re playing competitive, you likely care more about winning than you do about authentic sound, and it’s a neat feature to have.

The Bluetooth button is easy to understand and allows you to pair your mobile device, and power turns the headset on and off. Two other welcome features are independent volume controls for both chat and source audio. This means you can dial down your screaming teammates, and crank the music up, or vice versa.

Comfort

The big feature of the new Turtle Beach headsets, at least for me, is their glasses friendly design. Combined with the easily adjustable headband, and soft leather material finish on the ear cups and headband, it’s pretty comfortable to wear for extended periods. A lot of that comes from the rigid yet surprisingly lightweight design.

There’s plenty of strength to the headband, and the whole thing feels very well balanced. Not bad given its packed with batteries and wireless tech, which would normally lead to a much heavier headset.

50mm Drivers

Turtle Beach never disapoint when it comes to high-end sound quality, and the powerful drivers pack an impressive and dynamic sound. The low end is deep, detailed, and packs plenty of “wow”. However, the warm mid range sound and crystal clear highs will bring out more sound from your games than you knew existed. It sounds amazing, but you can push it much further. Using the mobile app and EQ profiles, you can boost the bass, treble, and create custom configurations to suit your needs.

Atmos? I mean Sonic!

I have a Dolby Atmos speaker configuration for my gaming and movies, and Dolby Atmos Headphone on my PC, which sounds pretty fantastic. However, Microsoft has their own take on the matter with Windows Sonic. They’re basically the same thing, with the Microsoft one meaning MS don’t have to pay Dolby a hefty royalty to get a similar sound. Having it on this headset is amazing, and if you’re any Sonic/Atmos enabled games, you can enjoy a more dynamic surround sound effect with added height channels. It sounds amazing, and while I once hated virtual surround tech, it’s lightyears ahead of where it was just a few years ago.

Leeeeeeeroy Jenkins!

As I said before, separate volume controls for chat and game are on tap here, so if you have a Leeeeeroy! in your team, you can always turn them down a little. Everyone will be able to hear you perfectly though, as the microphone is nice and clear, and even deploys noise cancellation technology to help drown out background noise, perfect for those noisy LAN gaming events.

Personally, I don’t like hard-wired microphones, but this one has a shorter boom and feels less intrusive, plus it folds up and mutes with a flick of your finger, so it’s not so bad.

Peter Donnell

As a child still in my 30's (but not for long), I spend my day combining my love of music and movies with a life-long passion for gaming, from arcade classics and retro consoles to the latest high-end PC and console games. So it's no wonder I write about tech and test the latest hardware while I enjoy my hobbies!
