Game streaming giant Twitch has announced the launch of IRL, a sub-category for non-gaming related vlogs designed to encourage creators to use it for reaching out directly to their fans. This kind of content was something creators would often upload to YouTube since it violates Twitch’s content policy but this expansion by Twitch allows content creators to ditch YouTube entirely and allows Twitch to compete directly. The type of broadcast content that IRL fosters leans toward the spontaneous, on-the-go vlogging rather than video snippets with higher production values. Twitch will also soon announce support to stream directly from the mobile app.
“We’re amazed by our creators who build thriving communities and create compelling content for millions of viewers. While gaming is their core identity, what we’ve heard repeatedly from them is that they are interested in sharing their everyday lives, thoughts, and opinions with their communities. IRL is designed to help our creators foster that kind of community interaction.” said Emmett Shear, CEO of Twitch.
This effort is the latest in a series by Twitch to branch out beyond just offering game-related content. Due to demand from their large userbase in Korea for example, Twitch has adjusted their terms of service to cater to social eating. In Korea, eating online with friends is a common shared experience. Twitch also has their Twitch Creative directory, where other gaming related sub-cultures such as cosplayers or crafts makers can live stream their creative process. For musicians, Twitch has begun catering to them as well since live streamed music is one YouTube’s largest viewership share.
