Twitch.tv Now Available on Chromecast

Streaming and professional tournaments of video gaming has been thrust into the spotlight in recent months. Not too long ago, we reported on Amazon and their acquisition of Twitch.tv, ESPN covering the finals of the International Dota2 tournament and an interesting statement from the ESPN boss claiming electronic gaming is not a sport.

In the latest of Twitch news, they’ve sent out an email news letter today announcing that their service will now be available through Google’s Chromecast.

Chromecast is a device that when plugged into your televisions HDMI port enables you to beam your phone, tablet or laptop screen signal straight to the big screen. Coming in at $35, Chromecast is said to support plenty of current large name apps such as Netflix, Pandora, YouTube and more – but now there’s one more special addition in the form of Twitch.tv.

Twitch has provided some basic instructions to getting your favourite streaming service onto the big screen:

“1. Open Twitch on your laptop or mobile device. Remember to update your apps if you don’t have updating auto-enabled.

2. Tap the “cast” icon. If you’re using Android, the icon is on the top right. If you’re on a laptop or iOS, the cast icon can be found on the bottom right of the video player.
Note: For Twitch to Chromecast from the web player, make sure to install the Google Cast extension.

3. From there, the live broadcast will play on your TV, while chat remains on your mobile device or laptop.

4. You can also access playback controls on your mobile device, or browse for other content without interrupting the live video on your TV.”

Chromecast works through your devices wireless transmitter and turns any device connected into a remote control for what you can see on-screen, this is dubbed as their “multi-sender functionality”.

What are you waiting for? We’re off to watch some speedruns!
