Nintendo has released a pair of new videos for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is expected to be a launch title for the Nintendo Switch console next year, as well as the now-defunct Wii U. The clips were shown at last night’s The Game Awards ceremony.
The first video shows Bill Trinen and Nate Bihldorff of the Nintendo Treehouse localisation department playing the game on the Switch. The clip starts in the middle of a quest in which Link is tasked with finding a shrine with the help of a minstrel:
The second video is a full trailer, which teases the game’s theme and shows of some of Hyrule’s beautiful locales. The end of the video even gives us a little glimpse of Zelda herself, even if it’s only her hand:
Breath of the Wild is billed as a big departure for the series, especially from the last Zelda home console release, Skyward Sword.
“The relationship between Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda first comes from the reactions of people who have been able to test the game, we are not trying to recreate the first Zelda,” Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto told French gaming site Gamekult (translation courtesy of Nintendo Everything).
“At the time, the latter was created with the idea of freedom of action and a miniature garden in mind,” Miyamoto added. “When the series started to evolve, we went to make more and more games with only one path to follow, which pushed us to create larger and more complex dungeons, to imagine enigmas requiring specific items which ended up giving very sequential games. We then decided to go back to the roots of the series and we started developing the game we are showing today.”
